Balut: Where Ducks Became A Delicacy

by Nhil on November 25, 2009

If you are a foreigner and you wanted to visit the Philippines, your trip will be incomplete if you won’t try to eat our balut.

Balut is a duck egg that is boiled and usually eaten with rock salt. You gave to eat the egg white (usually chewy hard), egg yolk and the duck itself. Just like what I said you can eat this as is with a little rock salt or have it paired with a cup of steamed rice.

Speaking of steamed rice, you can also make a variation of balut preparation. You can cook it in a lot of ways, pour tomato sauce and cook it like how you cook your meatballs, pour white sauce and serve it with spaghetti pasta, well minus the duck of course, or cook it like what you see in the picture. Flickr user arnold inuyaki cooked it and called it as Balut ala Pobre.

Your turn this time, if you have eaten balut or bought one, take a picture of it and let me know the link so I can see how you did prepare your balut. If not, would you eat one? Why or why not?
